As this column has noted on many previous occasions, there are certain items of furniture which never fail to attract attention at auction. One of these is a good set of dining chairs and it is therefore likely that the 10 being offered by Herman & Wilkinson next week - one of which is shown here - ought to fetch a good price. The Victorian set has mahogany frames and leather upholstery which, by the evidence of use, may be original and if so, ought certainly not to be changed. An interesting detail in the design is the slightly raised "handle" on the upper back section of the frame. The chairs are expected to fetch £2,500-£3,000.
Among the other attractive lots in the same sale are a Georgian bowfront chest (estimate £800-£1,200), a Georgian chiffonier (£500-£800) and an Edwardian display cabinet (£500-£750). Taking place on Thursday in the company's premises on Dublin's Lower Rathmines Road, the auction is due to begin at 10 a.m.
