The contents of a large house in Co Waterford will be among the lots at Sheppard's first auction of the autumn in Durrow, Co Laois, next Wednesday, September 22nd. This is a varied sale with almost 450 lots of furniture, paintings and objets. The most interesting lots include a Regency wine cooler, a large William IV serving table, stamped Pim & Co, Dublin, a set of six Regency brass legged chairs and a Regency rosewood brass inlaid card table.
Wine coolers were an essential part of households in the 18th and 19th centuries, but are difficult to come by today. This particular wine cooler appears to be in excellent condition and stands on fine paw feet. It is expected to fetch up to £3,500. An interesting companion to the wine cooler would be lot 312 which, according to the catalogue, dates from the same period. It is a mahogany and ebony string inlaid knife box with an unusual dome top which rises on a central pole to reveal a graduated fitted interior. It has a top estimate of £3,000.
Other noteworthy items to be sold are: a 12-foot Victorian dining table (£4,000 to £6,000); a set of eight William IV mahogany dining chairs in original condition (£3,500 to £5,000); a satinwood drum table (£2,000 to £3,000); an 18th century Chinese Chippendale elbow chair (£1,500 to £2,500); a handsome mahogany four-poster bed (£2,000 to £3,000) and a Victorian mahogany bookcase with unusual glazed doors and serpentine-fronted lower doors which has a top estimate of £6,000.
Lower down the price scale there is plenty of Victorian and Edwardian furniture including desks, tables, sets of dining and occasional chairs and dining tables. Among the picture lots several Markey Robinson paintings carry estimates of between £500 and £1,800.
Viewing starts today at noon.
