THE Reckoning label roster might be small, but there was barely elbow room on Whelan's stage last Sunday night when the combined talents of Kieran Kane, Tammy Rogers, Michael Henderson Kevin Welch, along with label supremo and drummer, Harry Stinson, bassist Alison Prestwood and multi-instrumentalist Fats Kaplin (button accordion, steel guitar and fiddle), put on a display of American music that was as rousing and entertaining as it was touching and accomplished.
The styles on display could broadly be described as roots, whether that be the dark country tunes of Kane, the blistering honky-tonk guitar of Henderson, the Appalachian-inspired fiddle playing of Rogers or the more plaintive folk of Kevin Welch.
This was a real working collective in action and one worthy of further investigation through their fine individual CDs, which are now available through Round Tower Music.
