AFRONOVA PROJECT FEATURING TONY ALLEN
Purty Loft, Dublin Sat 8pm €15 01-2843576
Hear the drummer get wicked. Afrobeat co-creator and Africa 70 legend Tony Allen is all over the city this weekend. On Friday, there’s a bit of a do for his Secret Agent album at the South William bar. Then, this Festival Of World Cultures gig sees the man who provided the backbeat for Fela Kuti and, more recently, was part of Damon Albarn’s The Good, The Bad The Queen joining the Afronova DJs, musicians and vocalists for a blistering night of deep and fierce sounds. Allen has been as busy as always in recent times with stonking albums such as Homecooking and Lagos No Shaking coming this way. Like those predecessors, Secret Agent sees him further defining his Afrofunk sound with a slew of guest musicians and vocalists riding shotgun as Allen keeps the funk flowing. It’s fair to say that they don’t make ’em like Allen any more.
