Tomorrow’s 11am-1pm tour of the Kabakovs’ exhibition at The Model has a special guide: the couple’s 10-year-old granddaughter, who will offer a personal account of the show to 8-12 year olds.
Russian-born Ilya and Emilia Kabakov have built a formidable international reputation for large-scale, generally accessible installations that typically involve elements of fantasy and theatre and take the form of ambitious social and political allegories.
For Angelology, the Kabakovs wanted to explore aspects of the mythology of the west of Ireland. They took up angels as a unifying theme, “our imagination and romanticising of angels, in particular”, for a show that encompasses paintings, sculptures and mixed-media installations. The results envelope pretty much every available space within the new, expanded Model.
