The eighth Burren Annual, curated by Josephine Kelliher, featuring collaborative works by Rhona Clarke and Marie Hanlon. Burren College of Art, Newtown Castle, Ballyvaughan, Co Clare Mon-Fri 9.30am-4.30pm Until Sep 24 065-7077200
There is a playfully musical quality to Marie Hanlon’s paintings in general, and this year’s Burren Annual, curated by Josephine Kelliher, brings Hanlon together with composer Rhona Clarke. Between the Lines features collaborative and individual contributions by both of them.
One of the former is Relic(pictured), a video that, like most of the work, is drawn directly from the unmistakable topography of The Burren. In a sense the visual element animates the elements of Hanlon's paintings that relate them to music: the images latch onto patterns in time, space and forms in the landscape.
Apart from video, she shows monochromatic drawings that tease out these ideas in another way. Essentially, both she and Clarke explore the nature of the landscape and in the course of doing so illuminate their respective practices and the way we perceive and conceptualise.
An intriguing event.
