Under a Grey Sky,Simon Burch's outstanding 2009 book and exhibition, documented the startling, expansive landscapes of midland bogs after industrial turf cutting – Irish landscapes, but not as we usually see them. For his new exhibition of large- scale colour photographs, Burch has again addressed aspects of landscape that we tend to ignore. Two aspects, in fact.
One is the woodlands once tended and managed, but latterly abandoned and left to their own devices. The lush, tangled, unimpeded green contrasts with the literally scorched earth created by the dramatic gorse fires from earlier this year, strange, ashy realms of cinder-like stems and grey ground.
Burch’s work is considered and painterly and wonderfully concentrated.
