The most striking price at last Monday's house contents sale at Mount Irwin, Tynan, Co Armagh, was gained for a mahogany double sided library table, which made double its estimate when it went under the hammer for £8,500. Two Terrick Williams oils also fetched good prices (£4,600 and £4,200) as did a mahogany early 19th-century bookcase. (£6,200). All prices quoted are in sterling. Good prices were paid for some fine furniture at Sheppards' first autumn auction in Durrow, Co. Laois, last Wednesday. A late 19th- century mahogany long-cased clock reached one of the top prices, £6,500. A rare regency mahogany and ebony string inlaid knife box fetched £2,800 and a set of regency rosewood-framed and brass-inlaid dining chairs fetched £4,400. And one of those wine coolers mentioned last week went under the hammer for £5,400. A pair of early Victorian miniature terrestrial and celestial globes fetched the highest price of the day at £13,000 at the James Adam sale of fine period furniture, silver, paintings and porcelain last Tuesday. Other items which made good prices included a George IV inlaid mahogany secretaire bookcase (£3,800), a 19th-century Chinese bronze figure (£3,500), a 17th-century Brussels-style tapestry (£2,600) and an early Victorian giltwood and gesso overmantel mirror (£2,400).
