In 1967 the author and Guardian journalist Peter Lennon returned from Paris, where he had been lured by cafes and existentialism, to make a documentary about his native Dublin. The result, Rocky Road To Dublin, is an unflattering portrait of the city, focusing on the constricting forces of Church and State in the Ireland of his day. Featuring interviews with John Huston, Conor Cruise O'Brien, Sean O'Faolain, Douglas Gageby and Fr Michael Cleary - who discusses the challenge of the celibate state - the film has a commentary by Peter Lennon and includes hand-held footage of the city, shot by Godard's cameraman, Raoul Coutard.

Tonight at the IFC (6.30 p.m.) the Irish Film Archive is providing a rare opportunity to revisit this film, which provoked a hostile reaction at the time here and at Cannes, and had only a limited release. One of Rocky Road's few champions at the time, the former Irish Times Arts Editor and Film Critic, Fergus Linehan, will discuss the film with Peter Lennon afterwards. Booking from the IFC, tel: (01) 679 3477.
