Battle of the Bands competitions have been around since the dawn of rock, but it’s not many that market themselves as a “live musical gameshow”.

Since it was established in Dublin venue Pravda (now The Grand Social) in 2004, the weekly showcase has featured a number of diverse bands with the winner of each round being decided by a custom-built clap-o-meter, which measures the audience’s reaction to each act. All participating acts are also interviewed and recorded for the King Kong Club’s radio show on RTÉ 2XM. Now in its eighth year, the contest has collaborated with OxJam, the music- themed branch of Oxfam. This year the winner will play the OxJam tent at Electric Picnic, and will be awarded a trip to Portugal to record with Morrissey guitarist Boz Boorer.
