Fans of Mary Costello's debut novel Academy Street can see the Galway writer in conversation with Paula Shields in the Dún Laoghaire Lexicon Library on Thursday, November 20th. The nearby Pavilion Theatre will host an evening with Marian Keyes on December 2nd. Keyes will discuss her new book The Woman Who Stole My Life with Maria Dickenson, managing director of Dubray Books.
Book signings
Dubray Books on Grafton Street will hold a number of book signings in November and December. The British actor and travel documentary maker Michael Palin will sign copies of Travelling to Work, the third volume of his diaries on December 6th. The astronaut Colonel Chris Hadfield promotes his new photobook You Are Here: Around the World in 92 Minutes on December 14th.
Lectures
The UCD Foundation for Italian Studies hosts a lecture by Enrico Terrinoni of the Università per Stranieri di Perugia on “Reviving Ulisse. A (re)translation of Ulysses into Joyce’s ‘second language’”. It takes place on Wednesday, November 19th, at 6.30 pm, in the Arts/Newman Theatre 1, UCD Belfield. James Joyce, UCD’s most illustrious alumnus, is also its most famous graduate of Italian, whose masterpiece was recently retranslated into Italian to such acclaim that it has been reprinted no fewer than eight times in less than two years. You are cordially invited to find out the secret of its success from the translator himself.
The Irish Writers Centre is running a series of lectures aimed at introducing readers to the depth and diversity of literature in the Irish language, past and present. Curated by Liam Carson and in association with Imran, The Discovery Lectures are in English and admission is free. Liam Ó Muirthile will discuss the Poetry of Cross-Talk on November 19th, using Allagar na na hInise (published in English as Island Cross-Talk ) by Tomás Ó Criomhthain as a basis. Máirín Nic Eoin’s talk on Life Writing in Irish on November 25th will explore both widely translated Gaeltacht autobiographies such as Tomás Ó Criomhthain’s An tOileánach (The Islandman), storyteller Peig Sayers’ autobiographical books, and Micí Mac Gabhann’s Rotha Mór an tSaoil (The Long Road to Klondike), as well as less well-known examples by Gaeltacht and non-Gaeltacht authors.
Nordic noir
As part of the Battle of Clontarf Millennium Celebrations, the Irish Writers Centre will host a panel discussion on November 20th at 7pm with Nordic and Irish crime fiction writers and experts discussing shared histories and current literary passions. The line-up includes crime fiction writer Thomas Enger (Norway), Leif Ekle, culture journalist and critic in NRK Norwegian Broadcasting (Norway), and the crime author and RTE correspondent Sinéad Crowley (Ireland). The writer Declan Hughes will chair the panel.
