TRINITY'S Anya Bowers gave the Irish team a winning start to the four-nation under-21 hockey tournament in Stirling yesterday when her goal in the 23rd minute secured a 1-0 victory over Canada.

It was not a good day for Scotland, for their juniors lost 8-3 to Wales and in the opening match of the senior tournament at Belfield, Dublin, the Scottish side went under 4-3 to Spain. Three of the Spanish goals were scored by Nagure Gabellanes.

Ireland play Spain at Belfield today (2.0) in a match that will see Mary Logue win her 100th international cap, while Scotland take on the Shamrocks, a team composed of current and former Irish internationals, two hours later.
