Cat Melodeon

With a riotous duet unfolding onstage to a soundtrack of the schmaltziest country music imaginable, this play seems an untaxing romp through the surreal days of Cat (Nicole Rourke), an orphan trying to make her own life, but distracted by the many, hilarious faces of Jonathan Shankey.

Yet Barry intends to sound out darker resonances. Cat's verbatim recital of psychoanalytic doctrine signals that it's time to spot the Oedipus Complex; certainly, the idea behind having one actor play every one of the most important men in Cat's life has nothing to do with keeping the numbers down. This is undiluted Freud.

Amusing as Shankey's troupe of characters may be, they never become more than types. Nevertheless, the play's cocktail of irony and energy make for a highly entertaining show.
