The picture by Vincent Van Gogh reproduced in yesterday's editions was a portrait of Patience Escalier, painted at Arles. Yesterday's caption said it was a self-portrait.

In last Thursday's article about Elizabeth Bowen on the arts page, John McGahern was quoted as saying: "Elizabeth Bowen - though not all her works are in the front rank - is a very good writer indeed." The remark was made by Sean O Mordha. The error occurred in the editing process.

The name of the Dublin medical doctor and homeopath quoted in last Monday's Health column on flu was Dr Brendan Fitzpatrick, not Fitzgerald as stated.
