The editions of December 16th carried an article on the trial of Mr Michael O'Brien for the murder of Mr James Healy. The article reported evidence from a consultant psychiatrist, Dr Mary ClarkeFinnegan, that she gave a false diagnosis of Mr O'Brien in order to get him admitted to the Central Mental Hospital. In fact, Dr ClarkeFinnegan never stated that she had given a false diagnosis. The article also stated incorrectly that Dr Clarke-Finnegan wrote to another doctor describing Mr O'Brien as having mild mental illness. Dr Clarke-Finnegan described Mr O'Brien as having mild mental handicap. The errors are regretted.
Where errors occur it is the policy of The Irish Times to correct or clarify as soon as practicable.
