The Department of Education and Science has pointed out that, contrary to the impression given in an article entitled "Split down the Middle" in the editions on June 16th, it was involved in cross-Border education initiatives before the peace process led to EU funding being released for such initiatives.

Most notably, it has run the European Studies Project now funded by the Department of Education and Science and the Department of Education in Northern Ireland. This brings together 91 second-level schools in the Republic and 82 in Northern Ireland as part of a project involving more than 400 schools throughout Europe.
