A table of national comparisons, published in the editions of Tuesday, May 23rd, of how asylum-seekers are handled in different countries may have been misleading where it stated that asylum-seekers in Britain are not permitted to work.

In practice, if an asylum-seeker's application has not been decided after six months, permission to work may be granted while awaiting the decision.

It is also accepted that the Minister has no decision-making power as to whether prosecutions should take place.
