Shostakovich {/TABLE} THE performing style of the D'Arcy Clery Collins Trio in the Lane Gallery on Sunday was trenchant, aiming at the maximum impact, but it is doubtful that the music is best served by such an approach. A continual emphasis, is, subject to the law of diminishing returns.

Haydn's Trio in G was given a Brahmsian resonance that could not have been obtained on the instruments of Haydn's period. It lacked the sparkle and wit of this many sided composer.

Shostakovich's trio is a startling mixture, of the austere and the frenzied, of the emotional and mechanical, and requires careful attention to detail to preserve a sense of unity. The players concentrated on the surface stridency and missed much of the plaintive and despairing under currents.
