DADDY G

If you require conclusive proof that the paranoid android direction taken by Massive Attack over the past few years is actually a 3-D solo run, take a listen to Grant "Daddy G" Marshall's mix album. A lovely smattering of warm, lived-in slow-motion soul, funk, hip-hop and reggae, Daddy G on the decks may whisk you back to the days of Blue Lines and the Wild Bunch, but really, there is nothing wrong with that scenario. Best of all is when Marshall selects tunes that are neither one thing nor the other - Melazz's Non Non Non, early Massive Attack treatments of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Les Negresses Vertes and a rare Italian lick of Karma Karma - but which sum up his sound dimensions nonetheless. Smoking, in every sense of the word.
