Basement Jaxx: Remedy (XL)

Basement Jaxx: Remedy (XL)

Truly a sensation, Remedy is a house album which bristles with invention, fun, attitude and a verve which you occasionally experience elsewhere on individual tracks but rarely as cohesively on an album as here. Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe's feat is all the more remarkable given that this is a debut album - yet six years of running clubs and parties in south London have obviously paid off. One listen to the punk flamenco-house shine of the opening track Rendez-Vu and you too will be hooked. A rough, tough and deliciously jagged-at-the-edges dance album where every possible sound is brought to bear on the big picture, this is the album which will dominate every party you attend this summer.

Goldie: The INCredible Sound Of Drum & Bass (INCredible)

Following the R&B rub from Trevor Nelson, the INCredible series continues with the drum 'n' bass don signposting where the genre might well be heading. It's a fierce introduction to Goldie's record collection and, while his own Metalhead label and stars may feature more than most, he's just as generous in paying tribute to the innovators who have helped shape the sound. Hearing Carl Craig's mighty Bug In The Bass Bin alongside Doc Scott's seminal Drums brings the listener right back to when drum 'n' bass was the freshest sound on the block. Add in spins for Shy FX, Grooverider and Goldie's own Kemistry (all the more heartfelt given DJ Kemistry's recent tragic death) and you have a fine state-of-the-underground address.
