VARIOUS ARTISTS Box of Dub Soul Jazz ****

You can hear all manner of old echoes on these new recordings from leading lights on the dubstep scene. Given that this compilation is on Soul Jazz, an imprint that has been to the fore in mapping Jamaica's back pages with aplomb, it should come as no surprise to hear the influence of such dub scientists as King Tubby and Lee "Scratch" Perry (and the whole sound system culture) on such new blades as Burial, Skream, Kode 9, Scuba and Digital Mystikz. Box of Dub's protagonists may have their roots in various junglist and grime runnings, but the drums and bass in use here are more spacey, futuristic and eerie than those employed by the headstrong. Be it the gloriously cinematic rush of Guilty (from Digital Mystikz) or the lush symphonic sweep taking you to Skream's Sub Island, these dub professors are coming up with some of most innovative sounds around. www.souljazzrecords.co.uk JIM CARROLL
