SQUAREPUSHER Hello Everything Warp ***
It would appear that even Tom Jenkinson himself has copped on that deliberate waywardness gets a little boring after a while. As with 2004's surprisingly soulful Ultravisitor, Jenkinson's latest foray is about exploring some different paces and palettes than those long associated with the Squarepusher brand. After all, peer platitudes and praise don't pay the grocery bills. Of course, as Hello Everything shows time and time again, you can still dwell at the edges without discarding all your marbles. What's interesting here is the sense of control Jenkinson exerts on his rhythms. Instead of sonic chaos choking everything, tracks such as The Modern Bass Guitar and Planetarium bustle with robust ideas and purpose. You can also see that Jenkinson's collaborations with the London Sinfonietta have had an effect on his work process, especially in the classical structures that abound. Squarepusher's brave new world is one worth greeting. www.warprecords.com Jim Carroll
