KIERAN HEBDEN & STEVE REID Tongues Domino ***

It's the third time that electronic boy wonder Hebden (of Four Tet infamy) and legendary jazz sticksman Reid (whose lengthy credits list includes Miles Davis, James Brown and Sun Ra) have come together on wax. As on the previous collaborations, Tongues is a blend of Hebden's quick-witted digital dancing and Reid's sturdy, muscular playing. Unlike the two Exchange Sessions, though, this release - billed as the duo's pop album - takes its measure from the fact that both musicians have now built up a confidence in each other's abilities to follow the line. You can hear this empathy in the pacey Superheroes and in how The Sun Never Sets unfolds. While it's obvious that Hebden is leading the way on most tracks, the pair's antennae remain in tune with one another. A match we'll hopefully hear again in the future. www.kieranhebdenandstevereid.com JC
