NIGHTMARES ON WAX Thought So Warp ***
You always know where you'll end up with George Evelyn. The Nightmares On Wax fellow has been producing deeply oscillating and soulful slow-motion funk for yonks, a Leeds b-boy specialising in creating mood-setters and bass-thumpers that indicate good times ahoy. Album No 6 comes on the back of a lengthy camper-van road trip for Evelyn, his Waxmates and recording equipment, from Yorkshire to his new home on Ibiza. Besides saving on the shipping costs of all that freight, Evelyn ended up with a smashing album in which, like previous albums Mind Elevation and In a Space Outta Sound, the details are quite wonderful. Tracks such as 195 lbs are lush soulful blow-outs, while Be There has a mellow buzz long associated with Evelyn's particular vision. It's another Nightmares On Wax album with a perfectly likeable swagger to it. Sometimes that's more than enough. www.nightmaresonwax. com Download tracks:195 lbs, Bringin' It
IMPS Bring Out the Imps Mule Musiq ***
The sound of Sweden and Australia coming together, Bring Out the Imps has plenty of dash and vigour in its sails. The Swedes are electronic producers Markus Henriksson and Sebastian Mullaert, who have
released tunes over the years and in different techie styles as Minilogue, Trimatic and Son Kite. The Australian interest are provided by the Decay jazzers. The collective spent a fortnight in a studio in Malmo working out how best to imp their sound. Perhaps the biggest surprise is how funky it all is, with Decay's live instrumentation giving a depth and a colour to the usually highly structured tech lines produced by the Swedes. There are many flashes of brilliance, stylish twists and skittish sounds throughout, with tracks such as Second Track a perfect example of how all the components gel with wild gusto. It's an experiment that proves yet again the close ties which exist between both worlds.
