Before the Dewaele brothers discovered the joys of mash-ups and bastard pop as 2 Many DJs, Soulwax were just another alternative rock band with nothing but a Belgian passport to tell them apart from their peers.

All changed post-As Heard On Radio Soulwax, though, and acts queued right around the block for a rub of the 'Wax. It's easy to see their appeal because when the brothers are on form they create some hugely euphoric and shape-shifting magic.

Witness how they transform The Gossip's Standing In The Way Of Control into a Godzilla of a tune, their slinky treatment of Kylie's Can't Get You Out Of My Head or the Herrmann-like tension brought to bear on Justice.

Of course, like all remixers, they do just phone it in on occasions and you really hope that Robbie Williams and Sugababes kept their receipts. Pity there's no room here for their storming electro-sizzle take on LCD Soundsystem's Get Innocuous. www.soulwax.com  Jim Carroll
