It has been confirmed that a host of stars will descend on Dublin in June. Glenn Close, Amanda Seyfried, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Orlando Bloom will be shooting a film based on the George Moore story Albert Nobbs.

Close, who appeared in the stage version, The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs, 27 years ago, will revisit her role as a woman who lives life as a man in 19th-century Ireland. Close is also producing the film.

Do you want more talent? Rodrigo Garcia is directing, and it looks as if Michael Gambon and Oscar nominee Janet McTeer will also be along for the ride. The distinguished novelist John Banville, former literary editor of this newspaper, has adapted the script in close collaboration with the producer and star.

“From the start, when Glenn Close approached me about the project, the story fascinated me, with its blend of strangeness, pathos and quirky humour,” Banville told Reel News.

The project is clearly a labour of love for Close. Though she has taken an executive producer credit on quite a few television projects, this is, perhaps surprisingly, the first time Close has produced a feature film.

Mind you, it is the kind of story that turns heads (and wins awards). When the stage production, from a script by Simone Benmussa, played off Broadway back in 1982, the New York Times felt that the play was “a curio”, but that Close’s “performance is transforming”.
