MacFarlane lands the Oscar ratings

As only dead people will have failed to notice, the Oscars took place on Sunday night. There were some surprises. There were more triumphs by longtime favourites. But one mystery still remains. How did Seth MacFarlane do in his hosting duties?

Well, by one measure, the creator of Family Guy was a roaring triumph as the ceremony achieved its highest viewing figures in three years. But there has been much chatter about the supposed unsuitable nature of MacFarlane's jokes. His song about bosoms in the movies, the Jewish influence on Hollywood and Rhianna's difficulties with Chris Brown drew particular opprobrium. The New Yorker went so far as to call Seth a "bitter asshole".

Well, if you hire Seth then you get Seth's brand of sophomoric humour. At any rate, McFarlane will not be troubling the pundits next year. "No way. Lotta fun to have done it, though," he told followers who begged him to return.

Elsewhere, satirical "news source" The Onion was forced into an apology after calling poor wee Quvenzhané Wallis a rude word in an (ironically intended) tweet. Yes, it was that word. The really bad one.
