On-demand content streaming company Netflix has released a trailer of its popular political drama House of Cards.

The show, which returns to TV screens on February 27th, follows the exploits of Frank Underwood, a Democrat politician from South Carolina, as he ruthlessly plots his ascent to the most powerful position in the US political system.

Netflix took the opportunity to release a preview of season 3 of its flagship show as actor Kevin Spacey took to the stage to receive his Golden Globe award for his role as Underwood.

It was his first Golden Globe win despite being nominated eight times for roles including The Usual Suspects and American Beauty.

“This is just the beginning of my revenge,” Spacey joked while accepting the award.

The US adaptation of the BBC series received seven nominations for the 2015 Golden Globes and Spacey's co-star Robin Wright won the Best Actress award in the 2014 ceremony.

The new trailer was well received online and within hours was viewed on YouTube more than three hundred thousands times.

“We’re murderers Francis,” says the president’s wife, played by Robin Wright, in the teaser.

“We’re survivors,” he retorts.

While the Netflix show picked up just one award in the 2015 Golden Globes, online comments pointed to heightened expectation ahead of season 3 with many describing the trailer as “intense” and “insane”.
