Pop Corner: Handbags on the floor and gum in the air as Ed Sheeran tunes out

Basic Tape aren’t afraid of love and Zayn Malik wouldn’t end it by text (or so he says)

Track of the week
Basic Tape - Not Afraid

What's that sound at parties all around the the country? It's the gentle plash of handbags being placed on the floor, for better to dance. And this French duo are here to help with that mission. With a four-to-the-floor beat, and a house-keys riff, combined with a Rose Royce-style vocal refrain, it's terribly difficult not to groove along. And we dare you not to raise your hands to the sky as they wail "I'm not afraid of love". All back to ours for the after-party?

Hero of the week is Selena Gomez. Selena told Capital FM that her party trick is to be able to spit chewing gum up into the air, and then catch it. Selz also gushed about bestie Taylor Swift: "She has the ability to be in any sort of room. Her presence is very strong. You can tell that she wears her heart on her sleeve, but she's also really strong."

Meanwhile, Zayn Mailk wants everyone to know that he didn't dump Perrie Little Mix via text. He told Fader: "I have more respect for Perrie than to end anything over text message. I love her a lot, and I always will, and I would never end our relationship of four years like that. She knows that, I know that, and the public should know that as well. I don't want to explain why or what I did, I just want the public to know I didn't do that."

Zero of the week is Ed Sheeran. His acting vehicle The Bastard Executioner has gotten the chop. If you've been watching, you'll note Ed's role was kinda grisly (he ordered someone's EYE CUT OUT!). Alas, the series creator told the Hollywood Reporter: "I think the mythology was a little too dense for some people. There's a glut of period pieces on right now, and I'm sure timing has something to do it. There's just so many f**king variables involved in that formula."
