Seeing Fragile performed by Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre for the second time on Tuesday - it was last performed by the same cast in Tallaght in 1999 - confirmed my first impressions. It is undoubtedly the most exciting contemporary dance piece performed in Dublin; and Michael Keegan Dolan, who choreographed it (with contributions from his three remarkable dancers), is our finest choreographer.

Like Beckett's Waiting for Godot, Fragile speaks directly to the emotions rather than to the brain, though it can say different things to different people. Audiences who enjoyed Keegan Dolan's The Flower Bed last September should not look for something similar: Fragile is surreal, whereas Flower Bed was realistic, if satirical. Simon Rice - part satyr but all too human, hiding in his bath - is totally unlike his brilliant drag performance as Mrs V; Rachel Lopez de la Nieta's angel, who wants to get down off her pedestal - or is it her cross? - bears no resemblance to her 20th century star-crossed lover. And Bernadette Iglich, as the elemental creature who struggles to escape from her fish-tank, has little in common with her respectable, suburban Mrs D. Their dancing is now even more beautiful, athletic and controlled.

Denis Roche's characteristic score perfectly underlines the hopes, fears, frustrations, envy, disillusionment and misunderstandings inherent in human relationships - or are they triggered by an indifferent god, acting out of casual curiosity as to how far these mortals will go? The imposing figure of actor Keith Synnot gives little away. Do not on any account miss this superb dance/drama.
