Fringe awards: winners and nominees

This year's Dublin Fringe Festival presented awards in 10 categories at the weekend.

This year's Dublin Fringe Festival presented awards in 10 categories at the weekend.

Heart of Darkness (by Gavin Kostick) won the Spirit of the Fringe Commissioning Award (€4,000), presented in association with Project Arts Centre for fresh, brave and exciting work. Other nominees were Caliper Boy (dANTE or dIE); Dublin City Counselling (Gentle Giant); and Simple Girl (Melanie Wilson).

The Jayne Snow Award of €1,500, for innovation, bravery and risk-taking in the pursuit of artistic excellence went to Rain Party (junk ensemble). Other nominees were KuddelMuddel (Priscilla Robinson); Beauty (written by Shawn Sturnick and directed by Thomas Conway); and DISCO-NNECT (You're Only Massive).

Best Production (€750) was won by Particularly in the Heartland (The TEAM). Other nominees were All Dolled Up (thisispopbaby); The Convent (Jo Strømgren Kompani); Incarnat (Lia Rodrigues); and Ketzal (Derevo).

Best Design (€500) went to Score (Au Cul du Loup), for overall design. Other nominees: Ciotóg - How Did We Get Here? (Ríonach Ní Neill, lighting design); The Convent (Jo Strømgren Kompani, overall design); The Anima and the Animus (Shakram Dance Company, sound design); and Ketzal (Derevo, overall design).

The new Bewleys Cafe Theatre Award (€500), for best Irish Fringe show under an hour, went to Art of Swimming (Playgroup). Also nominated were Come Up and See Me: A Peek at Mae West (Ageless Productions); and Waiting for Ikea (Wicked Angels).

Fishamble New Writing Award for an emerging Irish playwright (scholarship, dramaturgical support and €1,000) went to Shona McCarthy (Married to the Sea). Other nominees: Phillip McMahon (All Over Town); Georgina McKevitt and Jacinta Sheerin (Waiting for IKEA); Lynda Radley (Art of Swimming); and Claudia Schwartz (Ways of Making You Talk).

Best Female Performer (€500) was Elizabeth King (Particularly in the Heartland). Other nominees: Kristen Sieh (Particularly in the Heartland); Gillian McCarthy (The Rep Experiment); Melanie Wilson (Simple Girl); Caoilfhionn Dunne (Caligula). Best Male Performer (€500) was Bartosz Porczyk (Smycz). Other nominees: Palle Dyrvall (Catastrophe Communication Combinatoria); Jake Margolin (Particularly in the Heartland); Paul Reid (Metamorphosis); Peter Daly (The Rep Experiment); and Panti (All Dolled Up).

Best Lantern Award (€250), for design of Liffey Boardwalk lanterns, went to Tammy Bradley. Best Spiegeltent Show (€250), aside from La Clique, which ran throughout the festival, was The Cat's Miaow (Camille O'Sullivan). Other nominees: Pirate Sounds; Marlena Shaw featuring Mad Professor; and Seasick Steve and King Creosote.
