It’s taken a while, but Apple has finally released a version of its Mac photo software for its mobile devices. The iOS version of iPhoto is, as you’d expect, optimised for multitouch screens. The software does everything from changing the white balance on an image and removing red eye to altering its colour tone. You can retouch, brighten, straighten and crop images simply by swiping your fingers across the screen. Straightening images can also bring in the device’s gyroscope, if you want, or you can do it by touch on the screen.

There are also filters you can add to make your image look more vintage, or artistic filters to give it a different look. When you’re done, you can create a journal out of your photos, adding extras such as notes, captions, weather for the day and location maps, and giving it a nice layout. You can also share the images through Facebook, on Twitter or by beaming it directly to another iOS device in range that also has iPhoto installed. While iPhoto works just fine on the iPhone, it is best suited to the iPad to get the full effect.
