Good God! A Gospel Funk Hymnal
Numero
****
Despite what you might think, the devil never really did have all the good tunes. While the gospel funk genre only came to the surface when the good folk at Numero went to work on this project, they did unearth enough archival examples of musicians praising the Lord while getting downright and funky to fill an album to the brim with hellfire, damnation and righteous grooves. What unites all of these aberrations from the accepted norm of what constitutes gospel and funk is an ability to meet the demands of both Saturday night dancefloors and Sunday morning pews. Be it the Mighty Walker Brothers whooping it up on God Been Good to Me or the heavyweight funk boom on Bad Situation from 5 Spiritual Tones, the sheer raw power is mesmerising. The track that will really have you screaming hallelujah is O Yes My Lord from Voices of Conquest, a Detroit choir with a single drummer laying down the meanest, baddest beats in creation. www.numerogroup.com
