I have been hit eight times since I started to cycle in Dublin, seven years ago. Each time, it was by a left-turning motorist. One woman who hit me started crying, pleading with me to get a helmet because her friend had knocked down and killed a cyclist. The most significant thing I have found was the last time I got hit, by a motorist pulling into the kerb outside a shop, when I was carted to hospital in an ambulance. The motorist went to the police station at Kilmainham, and so did I when I was discharged. When I reported the incident, the garda told me he had no interest in prosecuting my case and that if I wanted to pursue it further, I should get the motorist's insurance details and take a civil action.

I'm sick of selfish motorists driving through our area at speed off the busy and dangerous extended roundabout at Glenageary Hill, in D·n Laoghaire. In the mornings, we can queue in cars for ages coming out of our estate, waiting for a gap to join the traffic going towards town, but people tend to speed up instead, to prevent access. It's very dangerous, as the temptation is for residents to go for it, and to risk an accident. It's a common courtesy that rush-hour traffic should provide gaps to allow residents to get out of side roads.
