Being a Muslim, I feel really relieved. I feel secure and happy in my faith. Happiness comes from enjoying yourself, and that enjoyment comes from being with God. I think it's totally fantastic to be a Muslim.
Ramadan was from mid-December to mid-January this year. During Ramadan, you aren't supposed to eat or drink anything from sun-up to sundown. I started fasting when I was about seven or eight. This year, I did it for the whole month.
At one stage I did find it quite hard, when I was about eight. But I wanted to fast, especially when I saw my sisters doing it. I wanted to be part of it. Once you get into a routine, it's not too bad. My friends were amazed that I managed to keep to it. They were very good to me, very respectful. They made sure they didn't eat in front of me, or talk about food.
Ramadan isn't just about fasting. You also try not to think bad or talk bad. You recite the Koran and pray. In the evening, when it gets dark, everyone has a nice meal with their family. Rice, curry, chappatis, lasagne, vegetables.
To celebrate the end of Ramadan, there is Eid. This is when you say special Eid prayers. This year, too, was the first time I had ever done the Eid prayer. It was brilliant. I couldn't believe I had fasted for the whole time. Saying the Eid prayer for the first time meant so much to me.
After the prayers, everyone congratulates everyone else. There is always a special meal. Sometimes people will go to a farm and slaughter a cow and roast it. That's what we did. We went to my cousins and had a good time. I felt so happy!
