THE growing interest in Irish related art was demonstrated once more last Tuesday when an oil study by Sir John Lavery surpassed its estimate of £5,000-£8,000 to make £13,500 (without auctioneer's premium) at Phillips in London. The picture shows Earl Morley addressing the House of Lords during the crucial period leading up to the signing of the 1921 treaty. Most of the leading protagonists involved in the debate are shown in this study; the finished picture now hangs in Glasgow's Art Gallery and Museum.
