Lords Dunleath prepare for sale

Two weeks ago, this page drew attention to a sale next week taking place at Ballywalter Park in Co Down. The house has been home to successive members of the Mulhollands, Lords Dunleath, since it was constructed in its present form in the mid-19th century.

Much of what is being disposed of in Monday's auction comes from the clearance of rooms which have not been much used of late and includes such items as bed and table linen, the manufacture of which was responsible for making the Mulhollands' fortune.

However, there are a number of other sources for this sale, including the Earl of Erne, whose family seat is in Co Fermanagh and some lots of furniture look especially handsome.

One such is number 703, a mahogany wardrobe dating from around 1800. This has a moulded cornice above delightfully inlaid panelled doors which, in turn, give way to a base of two short and two long drawers; the estimate for this is £1,000 to £2,000.

Lots 710 and 711 are also worthy of note, if only because both are of Irish origin.

The former is an 18th century mahogany tray-top table with typical shaped apron centring on a carved shell and cabriole legs terminating in claw feet (£4,000 to £6,000).

Lot 711 dates from the early 19th century and is a mahogany, boxwood and brass line-inlaid sofa table ending in roundel-headed down-swept legs on brass castors (£2,500 to £4,000).

A couple of lots later come numbers 714 and 715, both 19th century console tables, the first in mahogany with inscrolled legs embellished with acanthus leaves, the second in the style of Williams & Gibton and altogether more stocky in style; the estimates for these are £800 to £1,200 and £1,500 to £2,000 respectively.

Other lots of furniture which ought to do well include 720, a tall narrow 18th century mahogany bureau bookcase with glazed gothic doors in the upper section (£2,000 to £3,000), 727, an 18th century mahogany chest (£3,000 to £4,000) and 708, a mid-18th century Irish mahogany oval drop-leaf table (£1,500 to £2,500). Viewing takes place at Ballywalter this weekend and the auction, conducted by HOK Fine Art, is being held on Monday starting at 10 a.m.
