Love And Death On Long Island (15)

Writer-director Richard Kwietniowski's impeccable screen treatment of Gilbert Adair's post-modern novel features John Hurt in one of his finest performances, as a reclusive writer far removed from the modern world - until he becomes besotted by an American teen heart-throb played by Jason Priestley.

Nigel Hawthorne and Alan Alda also feature in a solid cast.

When a young woman (Hope Davis) finds a love letter apparently sent to her husband (Stanley Tucci), she and her family head for Manhattan to investigate. Six Days, Seven Nights (12)

This formulaic but amusing light romantic comedy features Anne Heche as an uptight New York magazine editor, with Harrison Ford as the gruff cargo pilot with whom she is stranded on an uncharted tropical island where their initial mutual antagonism is gradually eroded. Ivan Reitman directs.

The Gingerbread Man (15)

Yet another by-the-numbers John Grisham story with a lawyer at its centre, Robert Altman's undistinguished film is set in Savannah, Georgia where an attorney played by Kenneth Branagh is drawn into a web of danger and duplicity after he spends a night with a younger woman played by Embeth Davidtz. With Robert Downey Jr, Robert Duvall and Daryl Hannah.
