Main causes of stress
There are definitely elements of stress in playing rugby at international level, but I couldn't call it a very stressful job. This is my second season playing international rugby. I have to say that, emotionally, I was a bit all over the shop when I started.
I suppose the most stressful elements are the team selections and reading the media reports. When the media analyse your past performances, it can put pressure on you. Team selection is stressful because there is an awful lot of competition and you are always wondering if you will be good enough. It's true - it is tough at the top.
Coping with stress
About a month ago, the team was introduced to transcendental meditation. It's supposed to do great things - it gets rid of your stress, keeps you calm and improves your performance. You do it 20 minutes in the morning and evening. I haven't really practised it much yet, but it's something I might follow up. Although I'd say it's not everyone's cup of tea.
The nerves before a big match will always be there, but with the benefit of experience, you handle them better. I don't get worked up about people's expectations of me because I have my own expectations and standards. I am pretty hard on myself, so I know whether I've done well or not.
Putting it in perspective
People talk about stress in sport, but I think I'm very lucky to play rugby at this level. I'm really enjoying it, we have good crack during training and I love the sport. I'd say there is more stress in golf. You see the fellas struggling for their cards and it must be quite stressful. I really can't complain.
