Debussy's dreamy chord changes and languid soundscapes don't strike our ears as particularly revolutionary today, but his rejection of the traditional scale was to have a fundamental effect on music in our century. Pelleas et Melisande (1901), his setting of Maeterlinck's weird and wonderful symbolist play, blew traditional ideas of what was suitable material for the operatic stage right out of the water.
