The Beatles: Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967). Elvis Presley's hip-swivelling revolution gave birth to the cult of the teenager, but as the Swinging Sixties wore on, troubled teenagers grew into tortured adolescents - and the leading musical lights of the day began to produce music for grown-ups. With their Sgt Pepper album, The Beatles created a body of songs which would, in due course, be hailed as art - pushing "art" music further and further towards the intellectual margins.
