Want to know what the future could and should sound like? Go find Hyph Mngo, Joy Orbison's single from last year, which had received more love and attention than some acts will enjoy in their entire career.

Hyph Mngois as pure as the driven snow, a silky sliver of postmodern sonic notions wrapped in dubstep and techno ribbons. It might have attracted glowing comparisons with electronica's ruling hierarchy, but, on this outing, Joy Orbison sounds like someone with other aims and loftier peers in mind.

Joy Orbison is Peter O’Grady, a twentysomething London wizard who began his production apprentice as a 13-year-old after his uncle introduced him to jungle and UK garage cuts. Too young to hit the clubs, O’Grady took to the decks and sequencers instead and began the lengthy process of putting a sound in place.

Aside from checking out that Hyph Mngotune on Hot Flush, you can also get your fill of Joy Orbison with his free-to-download Doldrumsmix, on which O'Grady lets fly with assorted underground flavours. Expect him to keep producing such euphoria as the year pans out.
