For the Leeds band, the aim of the game is to ignore what all the playbooks might dictate. Most bands spout something along similar lines, of course, but this low-key, experimental, unexpectedly dynamic affair shows that Adult Jazz are utterly content to live up to their words and exist far from the limelight and white noise. Yet for all their shyness and introspection, Gist Is delivers numerous noteworthy moments. Songs such as Spook have con- siderable span and scope, all the better for the band's wash of folky sounds to take effect, while Pigeon Skulls is a trippy example of Adult Jazz's musical prowess. There are nods to the pastoral sweeps of Animal Collective, Wild Beasts and Van Morrison at his most bucolic, but these are very much downplayed as Adult Jazz seek to do without any familiar landmarks.
