Since Dinosaur Jr reformed in 2005, their records Beyond (2007), Farm (2009) and I Bet on Sky (2012) have been varied, fitting codas to the noisy, woozy, rock they have laid out since 1984, when they first began soundtracking lost hopes and desires.
Their latest is no exception, and in fact, surpasses the last three. Here they refine their vision, paring things back to get to the heart of the matter, which, while revealing trademark fuzzy-jangly-slacker sensibilities, also has an even-greater penchant for brilliant hooks that envelop J Mascis’s inimitable drawl.
The sense of playfulness and looseness is present right from the beginning – from the melodic, transcendent Goin' Down through to the epic, layered I Walk for Miles and the tender, swaying delicacy of Be a Part and Lost All Day.
