When you're Will Oldham, attempting to replicate the success and impact of Master Everyoneand I See a Darknessis a futile exercise. Just as well that the folk demi-god doesn't seem to care, then. The Wonder Show of the World, his 20th album, sees Oldham continue his tradition of collaborations, this time with Californian musician Emmett Kelly, aka The Cairo Gang, for another album of stark acoustic tunes. There's much beauty to be heard, although nothing particularly innovative: Go Folks, Gois one of the more gleefully strident songs on offer, while the harmonies of Someone Coming Throughare powerful and affecting from the first note. A sturdy effort, although hardly wondrous.
