Synthesizing: Ten Ragas to A Disco BeatBombay Connection ****
Back in 1982, long before acid house and techno came jacking out of Chicago and Detroit, a Bollywood composer and wedding-band leader booked a Mumbai studio for two days. Charanjit Singh wanted to see what would happen if he combined traditional Indian ragas with western disco beats. The result is
Synthesizing, an astonishing, audacious album that makes you realise someone was putting beeps and bleeps in the music long before the Detroit godfathers hit the 808s and 303s. Not only do Singh's hypnotic, majestic, trippy tracks predate what are seen as acid house's debut outings, but they're also remarkably well crafted, precise and adventurous. While the album didn't set the world alight then, this reissue should alert many to the brave old world of Indian acid house.
