Dreaming Waylon's Dreams

A couple of years ago (2006 to be precise), Chuck Prophet, master of the Telecaster and all-round wonderful rock'n'roller in the tradition of his hero, the late Alex Chilton, spent a weekend with a few friends in a San Francisco studio re-recording Waylon Jennings's 1975 album, Dreaming My Dreams, which was actually a tribute album to Waylon's heroes. The result has finally received a commercial release. Prophet's laconic, moody approach takes songs such Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way?, I Recall a Gypsy Womanand the title track of the original into places you'd never expect them to be. It mostly works, in a deadpan kind of way (the hazy electronic drizzle of The Door Is Always Openis the major exception). Don't expect a sycophantic flypast; this is Prophet's take on Jennings, and it's more about Chuck than it is about Waylon. See chuckprophet.com
