Switching for a LivingAlphabet Set ***
There’s a lovely old-fashioned tug in the tail of the debut album from Paul Hammock. A London lad who relocated to Dublin a few years ago and caught the attention of reliable local filters Alphabet Set, Hammock exudes an easy confidence when it comes to plotting the ins and outs of classic, warm-hearted, evocative, pastoral electronic music. Hammock would probably agree that Switching for a Living owes a few tips of the cap to such pioneers as Ultramarine or Boards Of Canada in terms of how he marks out his turf with melancholic chalk and uses sweeps of fuzzy sound to punctuate and highlight tracks.
There’s much to explore in the intricate folds of
Role Player
and
Commaspace
, as Hammock nips and tucks his grooves until they’re just right. An astute, assured opening set from one to watch.
