The Enchanted Garden CamJazz***
Claudio Filippini is a 28-year-old Italian pianist whose mentors include Kenny Barron, George Cables and, among his compatriots, Enrico Pieranunzi, Stefano Battaglia and Stefano Bollani. This album, with Luca Bulgarelli (bass) and Marcello Di Leonardo (drums), follows a more or less conventional approach to jazz trio playing. However, it's enlivened by the sense that this is a working group and by the sheer vivacity of execution and ideas that Filippini brings to it. A 13-piece repertoire, probably intended to show what the group can do, includes a majority of somewhat shortish performances. But based on the pianist's lyrical waltz, Art of Survival, his robust The Beast Instinct(with a superb solo by Bulgarelli), and the way the familiar You Must Believe in Springand Djangoare handled with subtlety and imagination, Filippini is clearly a talent on the way up in a fine trio.
