Al Spx's voice is the explanation for most of the palaver she has attracted in a short space of time. The young Canadian singer-songwriter has found herself on many next-big-thing lists thanks to that soulful, mighty, rough-around-the- edges voice, which works very well with folky and gospel-ish songs. By turns graceful, powerful and enigmatic, I Predict a Graceful Expulsion is a colletion honed and shaped to show off those tones. The musical moods are just as mannered and kept low and subtle in the mix. The plot comes together magnificently on songs such as Steady (a powerful, simple, dynamic blast of voice and acoustics) and Winter Solstice (the stately side of Spx's magic spells).
